Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Overview
The Town of Acton’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion develops, executes, and nurtures inclusive, equitable and diverse initiatives, programs and policies that foster a diverse community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We create and partner on Town-wide initiatives focused on serving the diverse Acton community. We work collaboratively with the Acton community and organizations to foster and sustain a vibrant community where all people have safe spaces.
Diversity is the range of human differences including social and ethnic background, race, physical ability or attributes, sexual orientation, gender, religion, education, age, political beliefs, life experience etc. The practice of diversity is empowering people by respecting and appreciating what makes people different.
Equity refers to fair and just practices that ensure access, resources, and opportunities are provided for all people to thrive. Equity and equality are not the same. Equality means providing the same to all, equity recognizes imbalances and provides resources to create an environment to obtain equal and just outcomes for all.
Inclusion is the deliberate involvement of diverse people, voices, and perspectives. It is the act of welcoming diversity and fostering an environment where different kinds of people can thrive.
